Flaw in Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 E-mail Module
Monday August 15, 2011

Recently, we were asked to configure e-mail reporting for the status of a backup routine in Acronis Backup & Recovery 11. When configuring the E-mail Settings (Alerts > Notifications > E-mail Settings) it was determined that if a user clicked on 'Additional e-mail parameters...' and checked the following box [x] 'Log on to incoming mail server', and then later un-checked this same box, the settings remained active.

Unfortunately, this made it impossible to send out e-mail alerts. Even though the box was unchecked and the settings beneath were greyed out, the subsequent e-mail attempts failed, and error logs corroborated that the 'Log on to incoming mail server' was in fact still active.

Using a wonderful utility called Process Monitor, it was determined that the settings are stored in the following file: C:\ProgramData\Acronis\BackupAndRecovery\MMSData\DML\F4CEEE47-042C-4828-95A0-DE44EC267A28.db3

Solution - Deleted all settings from the following details:
Incoming mail server (POP):
User name:
Password:

After this information was removed and the 'Log on to incoming mail server' was unchecked, the test e-mail was sent successfully!
